Pogonotrophic means pertaining to the growing of beards.
The word comes from the greek “Pogon” for beard and “trophia” cultiavation. Not to be confused with Pogonotomia which is about cutting beards.
It is understood that King Henry VIII, although a beard wearer himself introduced a Beard Tax in 1535 which was dependent upon the wearers social class. His daughter, Queen Elizabeth (not believed to be a beard wearer), refined the tax to cover social class and beard length.
Peter the 1st and Great of Russia was so taken with the idea that he also introduced a beard tax and beard tokens so that pogonophiles could avoid the pogrom by proving that they had paid.
Let’s hope students of tax history don’t re-introrduce one !
