History of hanging

Ancient peoples wore charms around their necks to ward off evil spirits, so pendants have a significant religious background. Many designs have endured over time, take for example the Eye of Horus pendants to the right. Similar designs separated only by about 4000 years ! The oldest extant examples of pendants are made from teeth, bone or shell but many fantastic examples in other materials were made.  The Spanish Pendant, is probably made of Emeralds obtained from South America and was created in the late 17th Century. It has long been the practice to hang tools around the neck, for example compasses, whistles, eye glasses & monocles even musical instruments. The pendants available at Abrahams store are purely for decorative purposes but they pay tribute to a long tradition.

Medallion Men

Pendants, of course were very popular with men too, particularly in the 1970s and 80s especially if you called them medallions. Adding a certain je ne sais quoi from a marketing point of view, a medallion implies a medal, or something of value that has been won. The Therefore the addition of man’s a pendant can be seen as a sign of instantly added virility.  As an addition to a hairy chest, for some of us, there is little more inspiring of inner laughter. Some men still persist in wearing a pendant, sorry, medallion but most wisely keep them hidden. Incidentally the modern use of medal as a verb can, for some of us, have a dual and dangerous medical impact. Have you ever tried to vomit whilst grinding your teeth ?

…. And boys

I have to confess, though, that aged 10, in the early 1970s, I bought the Parthenon one as my souvenir of Athens !
