the Maya

The Maya lived in the modern day countries of central America including Mexico, El Salvador Guatemala, Honduras and Belize. Their culture dates back many thousands of years and their art forms are quite distinctive.  War with the Aztecs and latterly conquest by the Spanish saw an end to their dominance of the area.

In 1697, Nojpeten, the Capital city fell to the conquistadors bringing last independent Maya kingdom of  Peten Itza to an end.  A large proportion of the population of Guatemala still have Mayan ancestry.  Tikal National park, location of the ruins of one of the Maya’s finest ancient cities, is home to many.

The photograph below is of a wonderfully well preserved step temple in the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza. You can see a very similar step design in the Mayan belts stocked by Abrahams Store.
