“Massimiliano Capella, Professor of Costume and Fashion History at the Bergamo University, Italy, has released his new book, “Missoni, La Grande Moda Italiana” to give us a dip into the world of great Italian fashion.
It is conceived as an element of design including original fabrics, drawings, graphics, color trials, dress patterns that dialogue with one another. The aim is to celebrate language and style that has become a mode of artistic expression, cultural and social revolution since the early 1950s when Rosita and Ottavio Missoni first stepped into fashion.
The thematic sections of the book, each introduced by text that includes the words of the Missonis themselves, highlight the critical artistic decisions that contributed to the success and recognizability of their fashion house.
Offering a look into the past and history of the brand, what you will find here is a kind of illustrated timeline with varied features that have underpinned the Missonis’ international triumphs. The section “From the Runway Scandal of 1967 to the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1973”, covers the fundamental steps that led the house to global visibility, from imaginative collections for the home to important collaborations with the world of cinema and theatre.
The Missonis’ creative path naturally made its way to the exhibition spaces of great museums, as we see in the celebratory section of the pictorial and graphic art by Ottavio Missoni and in the final section of the book, ‘An Artful Style’. Maria Pezzi said at the end of the 1970s, that even though Missoni’s creation are pieces worthy of a museum, “wear them, too”. The volume illustrates just how Missonis’ fashion became contemporary language, visual culture that has become an integral part of our history”.
