Relax after a long day with the essential oil of sandalwood, cedar and teak woods, infused with vetiver to create a rich complex and sophisticated fragrance.

Uniquely amongst our collection of Ortigia fragrances, Sandalwood oil does not actually come from Sicily, however I do know that Ortigia Sandalo is a strikingly good fragrance. The Indian subcontinent and Australia are centres for sandalwood production but nowadays it is grown around much of the world.

Cultural Significance

Culturally it is highly significant holding a sacred role in religions as diverse as Hinduism, Buddhism and Zoroastrianism.  The Ancient Greeks knew of its ability to promte calmness and serenity and consequently made extensive religious use of it. It is very likely that they used it in the famous valley of the temples near Agrigento on the south coast of Sicily, then part of Grecia Magna. The indigenous population of Australia reportedly used Sandalwood oil in their cooking and some 250 years later you can find Sandalwood in our ice cream, baked food, puddings, gelatine and alcoholic beverages.

Medical applications

Due to it’s slow growth and as fragrant oil, Sandalwood has become the worlds second most expensive wood (after African Blackwood). Having discovered its medicinal properties, practioners now use sandalwood an antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, antiphlogistic, disinfectant, diuretic. It also has benefits in those who are hypotensive and possesses memory enhancing properties. The oil has a low flourescence and optimal refractive index consequently it has a particularly niche position in the medical world, specifically within ultraviolet and fluorescence microscopy.
