It is very likely that they used it in the famous valley of the temples near Agrigento on the south coast of Sicily, then part of Grecia Magna. Due to it’s slow growth and as fragrant oil, Sandalwood has become the worlds second most expensive wood (after African Blackwood). Having discovered its medicinal properties, practioners now use sandalwood an antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, antiphlogistic, disinfectant, diuretic. It also has benefits in those who are hypotensive and possesses memory enhancing properties. The oil has a low flourescence and optimal refractive index consequently it has a particularly niche position in the medical world, specifically within ultraviolet and fluorescence microscopy.
