When John Barbour moved from Bogue in South West Scotland to South Shields in North East England in 1870, he could hardly have imagined that the business he created would become the world famous brand it is today. Worn by royalty and commoner alike, Barbour is the iconic British country clothing brand. Supermodels and superstars can’t be wrong, can they ?
Ask any super-mum or super-dad, or wunderkind come to that, and they’ll probably not know that Barbour started making protective clothing for seafarers in 1894 or that motorcycle clothing was a major part of their earlier range. No, they’ll tell you they make warm, comfortable, stylish, affordable clothes and accessories. Some may even tell you that Barbour and Barbour International Brands are the backbone of Abrahams Store clothing range… and that they also stock Barbour accessories too.

The origin of the umbrella
The latin for shade is ombra which consequently developed into the word umbrella in English. It should therefore be no surpise that their original use was to provide shade from the Mediterranean sun. In French there are three words for umbrella depending on purpose Parasol, Parapluie and Paraneige (the latter for protection against snow). In popular English slang an umbrella was aslo known as a gamp, which entered the language due to Mrs Gamp, who carried a large umbrella, in Dicken’s novel Martin Chuzzlewit. Unusual names for parts of an umbrella include ferrule, open cap and bottom cup.
