“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.”
Over the last 20 years, the price of clothing has dropped due to the constant reduction of production costs. Most of us now have at least 5 times the amount of clothing that our grandparents owned. This has serious consequences for the environment, our planet and our health.
Our ethos at Abrahams has always been to “choose well, buy fewer but better-quality clothing and make things last”. We do not promote ‘fast’ or ‘high’ fashion, but choose brands that share our principles.
For example, Barbour wax jackets are extremely sustainable and if you re-wax yours regularly, it will last a lifetime.
Our menswear Lifestyle brand BRAX collaborate with SEAQUAL INITIATIVE to support ocean clean-ups by creating a range of high-quality sustainable products containing upcycled marine plastics.
Eterna’s impressive range of upcycled shirts use sustainable lyocell fibres as well as recycled and renewable materials for buttons & labels.
Vilagallo produce a limited number of quirky and unrepeatable designs each season making them unique collector’s items.
It is not only our clothing suppliers that are finding durable solutions to improve the environmental and working conditions which have an impact on our shopping habits:
REN (Clean Skincare) have made a pledge for Zero Waste. Currently 68% of their packaging contains recycled materials or is reusable.
Our beautiful baskets from Parisian designers Jo et Marg are handmade in a small village in Northern India from recycled plastic. Each one takes a day to make and is unique.
Recent additions to our homeware ranges are the fabulous vintage Kantha Quilts which we import directly from India. Made from upcycled Saris, they make wonderful throws or tablecloths as well as being perfect picnic blankets!
These are just a few of our brands with good ethical credentials.
We continue to source wonderful quality products from environmentally aware brands with a strong Fair-Trade ethos and we will keep you up to date with our latest discoveries so please watch this space…
