About the Maasai

The Maasai, when I was growing up, were otherwise known as the “tall tribe” because they are renowned for their height. I can recall learning this when I was thumbing the pages of Look and Learn all those years ago. I found out that the Maasai live onn the whole in Kenya but also neighbouring countires as well. They had been a nomadic people who settled in the area in the early 19th century and live in huts made from dung.  The Maasai’s principal occupation is that of cattle herders and their traditional life has been built around that.

The tribe believe that cattle were given to them to look after by Ngai, their omipotnet God regardless of whose cattle they actually are.

We’ve always been admirers of their colourful and vibrant style too and we look for the most colourful examples. Since we opened Abrahams Store we have stocked products from several suppliers of traditional Massi crafts.  We do this because, as you know, we love colour and hope you do to. Made just outside of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, these bangles are bound to brighten up the dullest of days. They work well either individually of in combination to complement your look.

This traditional beadwork is used on earrings, headbands, belts and shoes amongst others. Maasai women make these bangles and each colour has a particular significance. Red is a symbol of bravery and strength whilst blue is used to represent the sky or water.

We’ve never been lucky enough to visit Kenya or the surrounding countries however we would very much like to one day. Me thinks Lake Victoria, the Great Rift Valley and the Massai Mara beckon.
