There’s not much I can really say about Leicester. As well as its fame as a centre for colourful socks, there’s not much else that Abrahams shares with it. So let me see… football, chrisps, hot air derivatives, yep, that’s about it…. except….

Leicester’s own Daniel Lambert

Back in the late 60’s or early 70’s I remember a feature on “Blue Peter” about a former Leicester resident. Daniel Lambert and his socks have stuck in my memory ever since. Living between 1770 and 1809, Lambert is renowned as having been the world’s fattest man. When he died his weigh was nearly 53 stone. His profession was keeper of Leicester Gaol and at the time was famous throughout the country.

If you look in detail you can see a page in a “Blue Peter” book which shows John Noakes and Peter Purves inside Daniel’s waistcoat ! To be exact, it is the seventh Blue Peter Annual and features the three presenters in Girocopters on the cover.
