Chinoiserie
Although eastern goods had been arriving in Europe for centuries, interest in Chinoiserie did not peak until the 18th century. The ‘Silk Road’ operaated from around 200BC and was only overtaken once shipping became the faster route to the east. Many artistic endeavours mimiced Chinese style, including architecture and garden design. However, it was in interior design that the infulence was felt most widely. The wealthy had furniture bought from China and much of this is now in museums and galleries around the world. Pottery and inlay work was often imitated in Europe featuring traditionl Chinese Motifs like pagodas, birds, dragons etc. Blue and white Willow Pattern chinaware was made extensively in England during the 19th century. Those familar with Delftware will recognise the blue and white design that was inspired by Chinoiserie. A lot of artworks also featured gold especially around the rims of cups and contsiners.
