Wicker Wings are a family business on a mission to give female artisans financial independence through their handmade, sustainable wicker bags.
Wicker Wings started as a brother and sister duo, Belinda and James, who after finding out their Māma (Grandma) hand-wove baskets in her village in China in hope for a better life. Fast forward 30 years and this is still the case in rural parts of Asia today.
So they created Wicker Wings as a way of shining light on their grandmother’s past and support the current generation of these incredible female artisans. They want to help current female weavers so they can have the same financial independence their Mama had – we call this, Māma’s Mission.
Their handbags start their lives deep in the Indonesian rainforest as a tiny seed, it takes seven years for the plant to fully mature before harvesting, meaning it has seven years of absorbing and storing the world’s CO2 before being turned into a handbag. Their rattan is hand selected for optimum length, quality and to ensure the plant is perfect before it is cut by hand and delivered to the bordering small villages where our bags are made – worlds away from big cities.
