The prince of pears
The word bergamot is the anglicised version of the Italian bergamotto which itself is believed to be derived from the arabic bey armut which means “prince of pears”. A bergamot is actually a citrus fruit although it’s not advised for eating because it is so bitter. That said, you can find bergamotto marmalade.

There does not appear to be any connetion at all between Bergamot and Bergamo in Lombardy, one of Italys most northerly cities although it is not entirley clear where the latin name Bergamum came from.
Geneticists believe that the bergamot was originally a cross between a lime and a bitter orange so it is usually green or yellow in colour. This hybrid origin resonates with possible origin of the name and the fact that Sicily was under muslim rule for several hundred years.
Generally Bergamot Oil provides a basis for many fragrances, particularly masculine ones, like Ortigia Bergamotto. It also makes appearances in conventional medicine where is posesses analgesic qualities helpful for alleviating joint pain as well as use in aromatherapy to counter anxiety or pain.
Tea and Sympathy
A blend of Chinese Keemun tea flavoured with Bergamot, Earl Grey tea takes its name from the Prime Minister (1830-34). This is probably why so many customers say “that reminds me of something” when they sample the product. Not only should we thank Earl Grey for this mavellous blend but also for his work on the abolition of slavery. Leading the way in 1807, Parialment, under PM William Grenville banned the slave trade. Salvery itself was not subsequently outlawed until 1833. Grey was also responsible for the Reform Bill of 1832 which widened the franchise, stengthening democracy in the UK.
