About Sicilian Almonds
The harvesting of almonds in Sicily takes place in the oppressive heat of the summer. By this time virtually all the flesh of the buds have rotted away leaving the solid nut and its casing. Surviving the intense heat has led to the Sicilian almond case being twice the thickness of their Californian counterparts. Almonds are a staple of many types of cuisine including Sicily, indeed Mithaecus, the first identified author of a cookery book, spread the word about Sicilian food preparation some 2500 years ago including some nutty, not to say revolting, recipes. In those days Sicily was a Greek province and the ancient capital Syracusa, or Syracuse, was home to Archimedies. The Ortigia is the defensive island of Syracuse which gives it’s name to the Sicilian Fragrance brand that Arbrahams Store is delighted to stock.
In Italian “Mandorla” is not just an almond, because of its shape it gives its name to the frame or aureola used to mount religious icons.
