The Flora of Sicily

The geography of Sicily lends itself to there being a large diversity of flora on the island, many of which have been combined into the Origia Florio perfume. Its southern location in the Mediterranean sea means that there is lots of heat. The summit of Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, is at nearly 11,000 feet, consequently there is extreme cold near the summit.  The wide range in temperature means that all sorts of flowers can flourish. Take for example ‘The flower of the Sicily’,  the Plumeria aka Frangipani aka Pomelia, which grows widely across the island.  There are around 300 different species of the plant worldwide but the Pulmeria Palermitana, which grows in and around Palermo, is probably the most prevalent on the island.  If you want to see a wide variety of Sicilian plants in one place, The Botanical Gardens in Palermo are well worth a visit.

Gods, Music and something to follow

Ortigia Florio brings together the scents of Jasmine, Wild Iris and Narcissus. Jasmine is considered an aphrodisiac and is closely associated with Aphrodite, godess of love and beauty. Iris, also found in Greek mythology, is a messenger of the gods and represents the rainbow. Iris was also an opera composed by Pietro Mascagni which gave it’s name to one of Sicily’s most famous desserts. Essentially it is a sweet doughnut filled with ricotta (or ice cream – which seems a bit more appropriate). Fancy making some ? Click on this link.

Narcissus, of course, again in Greek Myth, was the boy who fell in love with his own reflection. Other versions of the story more kindly suggest he looked in the water to see his reflection because it reminded him of his twin sister who had died and for whom he was in mourning. History has not been so kind as none of us would (probably) like to be called a narsissist (unless you really are a narsissist).
