The secret of using hard shaving soaps is not to use too much water and be patient !
Wet the brush with warm water and then shake off the excess water, work the brush at an angle against the soap with the soap holder on an angle too, to allow displaced water to drain off. Use a stirring motion and keep turning the brush as well so that the load is evenly spread. Do this for about a minute and then transfer to a shaving bowl or mug, and keep working the soap for maybe a minute more. Experience and water hardness will determine exactly how long you need to work the soap. Water hardness has a considerable impact as the harder the water the longer it takes to lather. The result may not be as substantial a lather as you would get from a cream but it still gives a comfortable cushion between skin and blade and as soap lasts a lot longer it is well suited to all shaving methods.
