We stock many Libery print products at Abrahams Store because we remember the Morris mantra… ‘useful and beautiful’. However believing in colour too, we couldn’t resist these packs of ladies handkerchiefs in Liberty fabric prints.
Each of these soft and beautiful hankies are 29 x 29cm. In order to keep the colour time after time, wash at no more than 40 degrees.
The origin of handkerchief is quite interesting. In the middle ages a kerchief covered the head. In French couvrir chef , to cover head became contracted to cou’r chef, and then kerchief, made it into the English Language. The addition of hand merely gave distinction to the purpose, a kerchief for the hand, rather than the head. You can see a video of how men should use handkerchiefs, here.
When Arthur Liberty established his business in the heart of Central London he said “I was determined not to follow existing fashions but create new ones”. His words have been an inspiration for over 100 years not least within Abrahams Store. (It pleases us that some people call us the “Liberty of the Lune Valley” ! ). Liberty’s shop opened in 1875 and was inspired by the PreRaphalites, Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements. Or maybe it was the other way around. Eitherway, although we have a family connection to Selfidges, Liberty’s is in our soul.
