Its always been a bit of a worry, stocking paper products when we are often told that we need more trees in the world. In 2015, following meticulous research Thomas Crowther, a postdoctoral researcher at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies said “We can now say that there’s less trees than at any point in human civilization”. That’s not good news as the trees are the lungs of the world. However at the same time he announced that rather than the 400 billion trees thought to cover our planet, there were actually 3.04 trillion trees.
When you think of countries with a lot of trees, you probably think about Canada, Brazil and Russia. In Canada there are about 8,000 trees per person, half that in Russia and 1/8th of that in Brazil.
We buy most of our paper products from Sweden where there are around 3100 trees per person. In the UK the ratio is 44 trees per person. A lot of paper is recycled and virtually all of our paper goes to recycling. (We also recycle bubble-wrap and cardboard.)
The table below gives a guide to tress per person;
Trees | Population | Trees per person | |
Canada | 318,000,000,000 | 38,000,000 | 8368 |
Russia | 642,000,000,000 | 145,000,000 | 4428 |
Sweden | 31,000,000,000 | 10,000,000 | 3100 |
Brazil | 302,000,000,000 | 212,000,000 | 1425 |
UK | 3,000,000,000 | 68,000,000 | 44 |
