The Roaring Twenties.

Emerging from this crisis, hoping for a new ‘roaring 20s’ now, it is easy to think back to the last century. Leaving behind the horror of the First World War and the Spanish ‘flu pandemic, people wanted to ‘let their hair down’. No more greatly was this demonstrated than in the world of Ladies Fashions. Short ‘bob’ haircuts became all the rage, skirt lengths shortened and simple tunic dress shapes took over. At the same time intricate decoration was added using beads and sequins.

Tunic Dresses.

Inspired by the simple designs of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, design was revolutionary compared to Victorian and Edwardian styles. At the same time intricate decoration was added using beads and sequins. In 1926 Co-Co Chanel designed the first little black dress; short, straight, simple, seismic. Vogue called it “Chanel’s Ford” in reference to the Ford Model T (any colour as long as it is black).

Who’s Betty Boop

The era is perhaps epitomised by Betty Boop, the cartoon character (actually created in 1930), but who was the inspiration Helen Kane or Clara Bow, or both ? In the 1930s the ‘moral majority’ felt that salaciousness was rife in the world of US cinema. To avoid Government action, the Hays Committee censored films passing ‘laws’ that even impacted on cartoons like Betty Boop.
