On Sicily it is pretty difficult to find anywhere that is more than an hours drive from the sea, so seafood is the order of the day for most Sicilians. The most popular 3 seafood dishes are;
Swordfish Rolls – thinly cut swordfish fillets stuffed with currants and raisins, breadcrumbs, lemon zest, capers, garlic, fresh herbs and pine nuts.
Sicilian Swordfish – fillets of swordfish served with a sauce of olives, tomatoes, garlic capers and pine nuts bound with olive oil.
Sarde a Beccafico – sardines that are stuffed with toasted breadcrumbs, parsley, anchovies, pine nuts, and raisins, sometimes served with parmesan. Traditionally served rolled and skewered on a base of bay leaves.

Sometimes the fishermen don’t end up with the usual catch. Back in 2007 the wreck of a Vaught Corsair fighter were caught in fishing nets off Sicily. This serves as a reminder that Sicily has long been a battleground due to its geographic position. the strategic importance of the island grew following the opening of the Suez Canal in the 19th century. The corsair, probably US aircraft carrier based, was most likely lost during the allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, the US 7th landing between Licata and Scogliti, the British 8th Army and Canadian 1st Brigade between Syracusa and a south west of Pachino. The race across the island took about 6 weeks. This was where the rivalry between Montgomery and Patton became intense with the US forces winning the race entering Messina in mid August.
